Details

This exceptional Tabriz rug showcases one of the most beloved and enduring patterns in Persian carpet artistry—the Herati design, also known as the Mahi (fish) pattern. With over 2,900 hours of skilled craftsmanship invested over 328 days, this semi-antique treasure represents the finest traditions of Tabriz weaving.

Design & Composition

The composition presents a dramatic visual journey through layers of color and pattern. A magnificent elongated medallion in deep navy blue dominates the field, filled with the intricate Herati pattern—a repeating motif of rosettes surrounded by curved, serrated leaves that resemble fish swimming around a central flower. This iconic design, developed centuries ago in the Persian city of Herat, has become synonymous with sophistication and refinement.

At the heart of the navy medallion sits a luminous ivory central medallion, providing a striking focal point. The field transitions through a rich crimson red zone, where the Herati pattern continues in warmer tones, before reaching elegant cream corner spandrels that echo the central medallion’s design. This sophisticated layering creates remarkable depth and visual interest.

The wide burnt orange main border showcases bold floral work with large palmettes, graceful paisleys (boteh), and scrolling vines—a beautiful contrast to the intricate Herati patterning of the field. Multiple guard borders in warm gold and amber tones frame the composition with refined precision.

Color Palette

The palette is exceptionally rich and harmonious: deep navy blue dominates the central medallion, transitioning to crimson red and warm ivory in the spandrels. The vibrant burnt orange border provides warmth and contrast, while accent colors including sky blue, golden yellow, soft pink, and cream add depth and complexity throughout. These colors have developed a beautiful patina over 40-50 years while retaining exceptional vibrancy.

Craftsmanship

Hand-knotted with exceptional precision at approximately 225 KPSI (knots per square inch), this rug represents the finest grade of Tabriz weaving. The high-pile construction (1/2″ to 5/8″) creates luxurious plushness underfoot, while the quality wool on cotton foundation ensures generations of beauty and durability. The supple drape visible when folded demonstrates superior construction.

Styling Possibilities

At 6’8″ x 9’7″, this rug anchors living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, or offices beautifully. The rich, warm palette and classic Herati design complement traditional, formal, and transitional interiors, pairing magnificently with antique furniture, rich wood tones, and elegant fabrics. The navy and orange combination also works wonderfully in eclectic and contemporary settings.

Condition

Excellent condition, professionally washed and appearing like new. Ready to become the treasured centerpiece of any distinguished interior.

Each rug is one-of-a-kind. A true collector’s piece and sound investment.
